Genetic & Health Screening

Ridgy Didge GENETIC & HEALTH SCREENING Process

Every Ridgy Didge breeding dog has their genetic profile and health screens published on the dog's profile page.

The Australian Cobberdog is a ‘breed in development’ which means we are looking for consistency in the puppies we breed so we ultimately meet the ‘breed standard’. We also want the most healthy puppies for our families' peace of mind and enjoyment.  In time, careful selective breeding should see more Cobberdogs meeting the breed standard for appearance, health results and temperament, but this is only possible with commitment from all Cobberdog breeders.

With the breed standard in mind, we select the very best pup from each litter to breed into the next generation. Each of these selected pups is screened and tested through the below processes.  Only pups that pass every test make it to Ridgy Didge's breeding program.

Every Ridgy Didge Breeding dog has a profile page displaying genetic and health test results.

GENETIC SCREENING

At Ridgy Didge, we do genetic screening through ORIVET. Orivet is a leading global genetic testing organisation that has developed internationally recognised protocols and programmes. Orivet states on their website: "Orivet's Full Breed Profiles(FBPs) are breed specific genetic screens for diseases & traits that are relevant to each breed. Our customised panels select from over 240 genetic tests that have been scientifically validated (published) for the breed listed. All FBPs include a DNA Profile (genetic fingerprint) which allows you to verify matings."  Below is the Orivet Full Breed Profile for the Australian Cobberdog genetic testing.

MORE GENETIC SCREENING

At Ridgy Didge, we also further screen every breeding dog through PAWPRINTS USA for

  • MICROTHALMIA (eye disease that can cause early blindness),

  • curly coat and improper coat.

HEALTH & FURTHER SCREENING

We also have every breeding dog screened in the following, by a specialist vet:

      • hips & elbows are X-rayed for joint integrity,

      • teeth alignment is checked,

      • eyes are checked for health and alignment,

      • heart health is checked, and

      • temperament is evaluated.

We encourage all puppy buyers to research extensively to ensure your chosen puppy has had all the health screening and genetic testing that we practise and recommend.
